1 June 2010 by admin, No Comments

The World Cup is coming up, and everybody will be watching. As always, the World Cup draws one of the largest worldwide TV audiences of any sporting event anywhere. But this year, there will be something a little different available for select viewers. The World Cup is being filmed in 3D!

Just recently, Sony has announced it has reached an agreement to film up to 25 matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup using it’s new 3D technology. Sony is the worldwide leader in 3D TV technology, and they are going to use the 2010 FIFA World Cup to demonstrate their technology to viewers and to convince them that 3D TV is the way of the future.

Now, it is important to note that the 3D coverage will not be broadcast like a traditional game. Sony will be using the 3D footage for promotional events and to demonstrate their 3D TV’s. There are plans, though, to distribute the 3D games on DVD’s in the future. But for now, you will still have to settle for watching the World Cup in HD.

What does this mean in the big picture? If Sony is willing to take a chance and make a huge investment on 3D TV, they must know that it is the way of the future. So, start saving your money now, because widespread usage of 3D TV is coming, and you won’t want to miss a minute of it! Keep your eyes and ears open – 3D TV will be here sooner than you think!

The Introduction of 3D Television

Ever since HD television been introduced, there have been relatively few new innovations related to TV’s. There have been small improvements here and there, but no real blockbuster changes that would make you go “Wow”. But, that is all about to change with the growing popularity of 3D TV.

If you have ever been to a movie theatre that hands out those funky colored glasses, you already know how 3D TV works. By using new technological developments, TV producers have developed a similar technology that allows you to experience 3D TV in the comfort of your home at a relatively reasonable price. Now, 3D TV’s are still in their infancy, and the major TV producers like Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic are still developing their consumer models, but within a year or two 3D television should be widespread enough so that it becomes viable for production companies to start producing 3D content like video games, movies and TV shows. Until then, there is not that much content available to warrant the purchase of one of these TV’s.

Is the world ready for 3D television? Based on the current stats, the answer is no. But, the stats only tell half the story. As with most new technologies, there are very few early adopters who are prepared to take the plunge, but once it starts catching on, it spreads like wildfire! Within a few years, 3D television will be more widely available, more programming will be offered, and there is a good chance you will find one in almost every household!
